As we near the end of February and watch the days growing longer, we witness the exuberance of the natural world waking up once more: Spring is near upon us. New life begins to emerge from the soil, birdsong strengthens; many creatures stir from hibernation. The season of hope, Spring is a time of meditation, cleansing and rejuvenation.

Holi: The Festival of Colours

In India, the arrival of Spring is celebrated with the ancient Hindu festival of Holi, the Festival of Colours. A playful cultural event, the origins of Holi can be found in Hindu mythology and it has brought together different communities across India for centuries. The festival begins with the lighting of bonfires on Holi eve, with the next day bringing fun-filled celebration of adults and children covering one another with coloured waters and exchanging sweets and warm wishes. Holi allows people to connect with loved ones and strangers alike: the festivities hold a deep-rooted sense of community.

As well as having great cultural and social significance, Holi also has a biological significance. It comes at a time where most have a tendency to feel lethargic, and encourages revitalisation through dance and celebration. When sprayed on the body, biologists believe that the liquid colours penetrate through the pores, strengthening the body’s ions and improving health. Additionally, the heat from dancing around the bonfires is believed to cleanse the body of bacteria that is induced by the mutation period of winter and spring.
